Will there be any pain when the braces are put on?
The process of placing braces on is totally pain-free. We will first clean the tooth surfaces and then we will continue by bonding the braces on each tooth using an adhesive material and dental light. We will finish by tying the wire to the braces using small elastics. It is a quick and easy process lasting around 30 minutes. However, if we use bands (braces for the back teeth), we need to place separators one week before we place the braces to open small spaces for the bands. Separators can be a little uncomfortable for 2 to 3 days.
How will my teeth feel after the braces have been placed?
In the first few hours after we put the braces on your teeth, it will feel a little tight and over the next 3 to 5 days, you might experience some discomfort.
What can I do to help with the first few days?
Discomfort experienced from braces is manageable. You can use a pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to alleviate any achiness. We will also provide you with a small kit that will include a silicon bracket relief aid and wax. You can use both of these to relieve any discomfort from braces rubbing against the cheeks and the lips. A soft diet including yogurt, soup, vegetables and pasta, will also help you in dealing with your first days with braces.
